Information for Prospective Postgraduate Students

The University of Melbourne School of Physics comprises some 50 academic and research staff, 30 support staff, and more than 80 PhD, MSc and Honours students participating in all aspects of research in the Department.

Facilities in the School include: a computer laboratory (Baker Laboratory), an excellent library, high resolution electron microscopes, well equipped x-ray and laser laboratories, a proton microprobe, atomic imaging facilities and extensive facilities for material characterisation .

General inquiries from graduates interested in undertaking postgraduate study are welcome and can be made to Assoc. Prof. Les Allen.

It is important to make contact with academics in the research groups which best represent your area of interest. Acceptance into the postgraduate program depends on available supervision and ultimately on an agreed research topic with your supervisor. You are encouraged to contact our academic staff directly and discuss your research interests with them. Further information concerning the research currently being undertaken by each of the research staff within the School may be found on the Research group web pages. Please provide staff members that you contact as potential supervisors with a brief CV and, in particular, details of your academic record. This will allow them to assess your suitability for a research project in their area and also whether you are likely to be a good scholarship applicant..

Where initial contact between supervisor and student warrants it, we may pay travel costs (within Australia) to enable students to spend a few days in the School of Physics. This is intended to assist both the student and supervisor in making an informed decision concerning enrollment in a research degree.

Students from interstate who intend to do a research degree in Physics and win an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) scholarship at the University of Melbourne may have their scholarship supplemented by the School of Physics (up to $5,000 per annum). This supplementation recognizes the extra costs that may be incurred by interstate students moving to and living in Melbourne.
