Sasha's Parallel beam system

Posted by David N. Jamieson

These ray trace images were obtained from PRAM from parameters supplied by Sasha Dymnikov.

A feature of the these systems is that the first order coefficients (th/th) and (ph/ph) are both zero.

The MASK command in PRAM may be used to minimise these coefficients with respect to the quadrupole lens field strengths.

Parallel output system: Russian quadruplet with L1=L2=0.07; s1=s2=s3=0.01; s0=3.19; ltot=3.5; x1=0.279675; x2=0.481865.

BUT the spot is tremendously large due to what looks like spherical aberration. What is wrong? Note that the box edge length is 0.5m!!

The standard MP2 system with the lens field strength adjusted to give a parallel output beam. Note how the output beam angle is independent of the incident divergence and position.

The system beam matrix for this system is:

(X/X) 0.962 (X/TH) 8.15 (X/Y) 0.000E+00 (X/PH) 0.000E+00

(TH/X) -0.123 (TH/TH) -4.529E-07 (TH/Y) 0.000E+00 (TH/PH) 0.000E+00

(Y/X) 0.000E+00 (Y/TH) 0.000E+00 (Y/Y) 0.962 (Y/PH) 8.15

(PH/X) 0.000E+00 (PH/TH) 0.000E+00 (PH/Y) -0.123 (PH/PH) -1.316E-07

AGAIN the spherical aberration is HUGE. What is wrong? Note that the box edge length is 2 m!!
